The Method for Posture

The way you walk stand and sit has a major effect on your physical and emotional health. Even the laziest person who doesn’t want to do any exercise can improve their health by learning how to walk correctly. Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. Good posture involves training your body to have the least strain placed on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or weight-bearing activities.

Many factors lead to poor posture including; car seats, chairs and couches; injuries and compensation to avoid pain; working with computers; poor nutrition; and even loss of bone density due to the natural effects of aging. Another common problem is our thighs leaning forward of the pelvis rather than living under it, which causes a tucking of the pelvis and a compression of the lumbar discs. This can lead to chronic lower and upper back pain and soreness, muscle weakness, problems with lower extremity circulation and much more. Posture is a window to the spine and poor posture can indicate there is a problem with the spine and nervous system.

The FitzGordon Method uses core exercises and proper walking pattern to realign your posture in a dynamic and balanced way. Standing is possibly our hardest task. Learning to walk is the easiest way to improve your posture

I'd always assumed my bad posture was a glitch of biology that I had little control over. It wasn't until I signed up for the FitzGordon walking program that I realized there were steps I could take to reprogram the way I carry myself. Jonathan's a great teacher, and he offered an intense focus on anatomy that made intuitive sense to me. For the first time in my life, I actually paid attention to the way I walked and stood, and I feel like it's made a world of difference. I'm a still a work-in-progress, but I finally know what I have to do - Kerrie
